Restoring Hope and Mobility Through Pediatric Orthopedic Care
Dr. Brian Scannell, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at OrthoCarolina, recently embarked on a mission trip to Guayaquil, Ecuador, in early October. This mission is part of Project Perfect World - an organization committed to providing medical care and support to underserved communities around the world.
Dr. Scannell shared with us that this trip holds special significance for him as it marks his return to the mission work he has passionately pursued in the past but was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Scannell's Life-Changing Surgeries at Hospital de Niños Dr Roberto Gilbert
Upon arrival at the Hospital de Niños Dr Roberto Gilbert, Dr. Scannell, and the team wasted no time in getting to work. On the first day alone, they conducted a clinic where they saw 70 patients in addition to performing four surgeries. One surgery in particular stood out - a life-changing procedure for a four-year-old girl with a congenitally dislocated hip. This little girl had never received any prior treatment, but under the expert care of Dr. Scannell, she underwent a transformative surgery that will forever impact her life.
In addition to their clinical work, Dr. Scannell and the team actively taught local medical students and collaborated with attending orthopedic surgeons, furthering OrthoCarolina's commitment to innovation and the training of orthopedic specialists, worldwide.
Dr. Scannell's expertise, compassion, and commitment to teaching have had a profound impact on countless patients, both locally and internationally, and we are so proud to have him on OrthoCarolina's Pediatric team.
