Biography
Dr. Dana Piasecki’s medical career has taken him all over the nation. His education began with an undergraduate degree in Biology at Harvard University. He then moved south to obtain his doctorate in medicine from Vanderbilt and back north to New York to complete an orthopedic surgery residency at the esteemed Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Piasecki completed his Sports Medicine Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center, where he also served as Assistant Team Physician for the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls, and Head Team Physician for the Chicago Steel Hockey Squad. During his fellowship year, he instructed orthopedic surgery residents and authored more than twenty peer-reviewed publications. He is currently active in cutting-edge orthopedic research and serves as a surgeon educator, helping to training orthopedic residents at Atrium Health and acting as Fellowship Director for OrthoCarolina Sports Medicine Fellowship.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Dr. Piasecki has a long personal history of athletics. He is a former rower, water polo player, Division I NCAA swimmer, and was a member of the United States National Flatwater Sprint Kayaking Team (1996-2000). He was a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete for two years, narrowly missing a 2000 Olympic kayaking berth and winning medals at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, U.S. National Championships, World Sprint Team Trials and Canadian National Championships. He now serves as a volunteer physician for the U.S. Olympic Committee.
Beyond his love of sports, Dr. Piasecki greatly enjoys traveling with his wife, who is a neonatologist, son, and daughters.

- Prospective evaluation of Juvenile Minced Cartilage Transplantation for symptomatic chondral defects
- Prospective Randomized, Pivotal Phase III FDA Trial evaluating Tissue Engineered Neocartilage Transplant for symptomatic chondral defects
- 2008-present: Orthocarolina Complex Knee and Cartilage Restoration Institute. Research interests and ongoing projects involving fresh allograft and scaffold-enhanced chondral resurfacing, ACL and multiligamentous knee reconstructions.
- 2007-2008: Orthopaedic Sports Fellow, Rush University Medical Center. Ongoing basic science, clinical outcome and review article preparations.
- 2002-2005: Resident, Hospital for Special Surgery. Prospective cohort study of the incidence of thromboembolic disease in spine patients following combined anterior/posterior spinal reconstruction, using MRV as an adjunct to screening.
- 2001-2002: Research Associate, Vanderbilt University Department of Sports Medicine. Prospective cohort evaluation of gender-specific chondral and meniscal injury patterns following acute ACL tear.
- 1998-2000: Laboratory Associate, Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Cooperative basic science work with Drs. David Schubert and Yuanbin Liu in defining glutamate toxicity in neuronal cell lines. Methods: ELISA, tissue culture, mouse and rat fetal hippocampal dissection.
- 1997-1998: Research Assistant, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Department of Surgical Research. Worked with Dr. Paul Flakoll examining the accuracy of Air Displacement Plethysmography in measuring body composition. Methods: VO2 Max Testing, Underwater Weighing, DEXA, BIA, animal surgery.
- 1997-1998: Research Assistant, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Xenograft Transplantation Laboratory. Worked with Dr. Richard Pierson III, examining cellular sources of thromboxane in hyperacute rejection of the porcine lung. Methods: ELISA, PCR, animal surgery.
- 1996-1997: Medical Student Intern, University of Vermont Department of Human Behavioral Pharmacology. Worked with Dr. Warren Bickel, examining the hepatotoxicity of Buprenorphine, a mu opioid agonist used in the treatment of opioid dependency.
