CHARLOTTE, N.C. – March 3, 2025 – OrthoCarolina, a leading independent orthopedic practice, is proud to announce the launch of its Orthopedic Physician Assistant (PA) Fellowship Program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to enhance PA education, clinical expertise, and surgical skills. Now accepting applications, this 12-month fellowship provides a rare and invaluable opportunity for both recent PA graduates and experienced PAs looking to transition into orthopedics. Through comprehensive, hands-on training with OrthoCarolina’s nationally recognized orthopedic surgeons, fellows will develop the expertise needed to meet the growing demands of the field.
The Orthopedic PA Fellowship offers fellows immersive, hands-on training in a high-volume orthopedic environment, refining their skills in both clinical practice and surgical procedures. Throughout the program, fellows will rotate through nationally recognized orthopedic subspecialties, including foot and ankle, hip and knee, shoulder and elbow, hand, spine, sports medicine, pediatrics, and physiatry. In addition, they will gain specialized experience in advanced programs such as the Brachial Plexus Clinic, Cartilage Restoration Institute, Congenital Hand Center, and Periprosthetic Joint Infection Center, providing exposure to complex orthopedic conditions and innovative treatments.
"We are thrilled to create this pathway for the next generation of aspiring orthopedic PAs. For years OrthoCarolina has been one of the nation’s most sought-after sites for orthopedic MD fellows and residents. We are now able to extend that same opportunity to the Physician Assistant, offering them an educational track to ultimately equip them to competently and confidently treat orthopedic patients across the country," shared Andy Hylton, PA, OrthoCarolina’s Director of Advanced Practice Practitioners.
Beyond clinical and surgical training, the fellowship incorporates leadership development, research opportunities, diversity and inclusion awareness, and communication skill-building, ensuring graduates emerge as well-rounded, highly skilled practitioners. The program’s didactic phase includes weekly conferences, journal clubs, evening lectures, and leadership training to further enhance the fellows’ expertise.
The Orthopedic PA Fellowship Program underscores OrthoCarolina’s dedication to fostering clinical excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care. By equipping PAs with advanced skills and specialized training, OrthoCarolina is shaping the future of orthopedic care, ensuring the next generation of providers is prepared to meet the evolving needs of patients nationwide.
