How Knee Injections Transformed William Busse's Journey from Pain to Perseverance

William Busse, an 85-year-old avid golfer, fell on the 18th hole of the golf course, resulting in a pinched knee and meniscus tear in March of 2023. If that wasn't enough, he was already dealing with severe knee pain due to arthritis in his right knee.

Conquering the Rough

Arthritis is the wear and tear of joints over time and can cause swelling, stiffness, and pain in the joints. The torn meniscus was a result of arthritis as the weaker knee made it more susceptible to tears.

After searching for treatment on Google, William was thrilled that the OrthoCarolina Urgent Care in Ballantyne was open on a Sunday. Once there, the doctor on call drained the fluid in his knee and conducted x-rays and later that week, his primary care physician referred him to Dr. John Masonis at the Hip and Knee Center for further evaluation.

Injecting Hope

Impressed by the professionalism and thoroughness of Dr. Masonis, William opted for injections over surgery as he is the primary caretaker of his wife. Both Erin Yablonski, PA-C, and Dr. Masonis were very understanding of his situation and suggested knee injections to sustain his lifestyle. William has been receiving injections every three months, with each session consisting of an injection in each knee, providing complete relief for about two months.

William's goal for these injections is to maintain his quality of life for himself and his wife, who also gets injections for her bone-on-bone knee issues.

Knee Deep in Relief

William appreciates the care provided by OrthoCarolina, especially Erin who he called "a wonderful and highly professional individual." He praised the care and positive interactions with the staff at both locations that had a huge impact on him. He valued their professionalism, empathy, and thoroughness in providing treatment options, other than surgery.

"Dr. Masonis and his team have done an excellent job in identifying and diagnosing the problem and have recommended long-term and short-term options," William said in an interview with OrthoCarolina.

Thanks to these injections, he can continue enjoying his weekly activities like golfing, caring for his wife, and riding the stationary bike without the need for surgery.
