OCRI Clinical Research Fellowship
Join our fellowship program as a Clinical Research Fellow and embark on an enriching journey collaborating with our OrthoCarolina Research Institute. You'll delve into various facets of clinical research, from conducting outcome studies to delving into database queries and cadaveric science exploration. Dive into biomechanical studies and gain hands-on experience managing IRB submissions, patient cohort recruitment, and data collection. As an OrthoCarolina Research Institute Research Fellow, you'll:
- Work closely with collaborative research organizations, physician researchers, funding agencies, and other
healthcare professionals on investigator-initiated research. - Ensure compliance with all HIPAA requirements and maintain strict confidentiality in all aspects of work.
- Exhibit skills in establishing and maintaining effective internal and external working relationships.
- Share expertise and knowledge with OCRI staff to maintain and improve workflow and internal processes to
increase productivity and research quality. - Assist with protocol development, writing, editing, analysis, and publication submissions.
- Write and/or edit abstracts, posters, manuscripts, grants, and research progress reports as required.
- Reviews, edits, and writes to ensure quality data and reports generated by Physician Researchers involved with
OCRI research projects. - Assist with the design of research protocols.
- Work with researchers to shape and direct research questions.
- Assist with grant applications to pursue financing for internal research projects as requested.
- Attend and present at IRB, RAC, society, and other meetings as requested.
- Attend professional conferences for the presentation of research data as requested. (some travel required)
- Conduct literature searches, data management plans, and REDCap database reviews for all assigned studies.
- Perform other responsibilities, duties, and functions as requested from time to time by supervising physician

The Clinical Research Fellow collaborates closely with research organizations, physician researchers, funding agencies, and healthcare professionals on investigator-initiated research. Ensuring compliance with all HIPAA requirements and maintaining strict confidentiality in all aspects of work is paramount. They exhibit skills in establishing and maintaining effective internal and external working relationships and sharing expertise and knowledge with OCRI staff to enhance workflow and internal processes, thereby increasing productivity and research quality.
Assisting with protocol development, writing, editing, analysis, and publication submissions is a core responsibility, along with writing and/or editing abstracts, posters, manuscripts, grants, and research progress reports as required. The Fellow reviews, edits, and writes to ensure the quality of data and reports generated by Physician Researchers involved with OCRI research projects. Additionally, they contribute to the design of research protocols and collaborate with researchers to shape and direct research questions.
Grant application assistance is provided to pursue financing for internal research projects, and participation in meetings such as IRB, RAC, society, and professional conferences for research data presentation is expected, with some travel involved. Conducting literature searches, data management plans, and REDCap database reviews for assigned studies are routine tasks. Finally, the Fellow performs other responsibilities, duties, and functions as requested by the supervising physician.
Education
- A bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, public health, or other related scientific field.
- Medical students between M2/M3 or M3/M4 interested in orthopedic surgery residency preferred.
- Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- A combination of appropriate education and experience in literature review, study conduct, and medical writing.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Excellent initiative, time management, and multitasking capabilities.
- Experience with grant writing
- Competent in computer systems and applications – specifically proficient in word processing, database management, and slide preparation using PC software.
- Experience managing multiple large and varied research studies simultaneously.
- Experience collecting data in large electronic databases.
- Experience with medical chart review.
This full-time position will work on research projects alongside physicians and our organizations. Your role involves ensuring confidentiality, contributing to research tasks like protocol development and data analysis, and assisting with grant applications. Reporting to the Outcomes Research Manager, this exempt position may require occasional travel.

Physician Researchers working through OCRI blend academic research into their daily patient practice. Clinical concerns and questions witnessed during patient visits or surgery become controlled research studies that can make an immediate impact in improving patient care. Research results are then shared through the teaching of Atrium Physician Residents and OrthoCarolina Physician Fellows, presentations at large orthopedic medical meetings, and through peer-reviewed educational journals.
