More than 2,100 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student athletes received complimentary orthopedic screenings from the team at OrthoCarolina today as part of Heart of a Champion Day, a first-ever partnership between CMS, Levine Children’s Hospital, Sanger Clinic and OrthoCarolina.
The screenings aimed to catch injuries or medical conditions before they cause problems, allowing student athletes to work with medical teams on a rehabilitation programs during the summer months and return to the field or court healthy next school year.
Each Heart of a Champion Day screening included a review of medical history, a sports-specific medical screening, musculoskeletal exam and vision exam. Students also received heart screenings including electrocardiograms and echocardiograms to check for heart conditions that could lead to sudden death if the heart is stressed during athletic competition.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association requires all students to undergo an athletic screening before they are allowed to participate in organized sports activities. |
